the crooked line aims to discuss the use of cultural expression by the displaced people of Burma. In bringing forward the art, poetry, music and narratives of the displaced, it hopes to provide a greater understanding of the creation, distribution and dissemination of voices from the margins.
While much of the content of this blog will focus on the ethnic Karen displaced along the Thai-Burma border, it hopes to open this discussion to the broader issues of using art to explore identity, displacement and cultural values.
I must declare that the idea for this blog stems from a PhD I am currently labouring through. This thesis is looking at how issues around displacement and identity are explored through the cultural expression of an ethnic group from Burma, the Karen. However, I hope this site will be a little less of the academic and much more of the creative.
a quick explanation of the name of this blog…
the crooked line is a term used by a friend and artist in Burma to explain the process by which artists must present their messages in a country with strict censorship measures and harsh prison sentences for dissent. the crooked line refers to the round-about way in which artists must convey their stories in order to evade these censors.
